Leo Season and Your Human Design — How the Sun's Transit Through Leo Activates Your Bodygraph

In Human Design, the Sun's transit through the zodiac activates specific gates in the bodygraph — and for roughly 30 days, those gates become the field atmosphere that every design on the planet is marinating in. Whether the gate is in your chart or not determines the specific way you will feel it. But everyone feels it.

This guide maps what happens, mechanically, when the Sun moves into Leo.

The Ancient Root

The Kemetic goddess Sekhmet — lioness-headed, solar-eyed, daughter of Ra — holds the archetype that the Western Leo signature only partially inherits. Sekhmet is the fire that burns away what cannot stay. She is not cruelty. She is the solar intensity that demands honesty from whatever meets it.

When the Sun enters Leo each year, the field activates Sekhmet's current. What was hidden under the earlier spring's ground cycle and the early summer's emotional waters now gets exposed to direct solar light. What is lived-in-integrity grows. What is false wilts.

In Yoruba cosmology, Ṣàngó's month — the fire-authority cycle — serves the same field function. This is the time of year when authority is tested: authority over one's own life, one's own radiance, one's own refusal to hide.

Leo season in Human Design is the Sekhmet test. Five gates activate. Five interrogations of your sovereignty get asked. Whether you have the corresponding gates in your chart or not, the field is asking the questions.

What Leo Season Is, Mechanically

The Sun in the zodiac moves roughly 1° per day and covers 30° per sign. Each zodiac sign contains between five and six Human Design gates, depending on where the gate boundaries fall in the Rave cosmology.

Leo (roughly July 22 to August 22) activates these gates in order:

• Gate 31 — The Influence (~Leo 0° to 5°37')
• Gate 33 — The Retreat / Retelling (~Leo 5°37' to 11°15')
• Gate 7 — The Role of the Self / The Army (~Leo 11°15' to 16°52')
• Gate 4 — Formulization / Youthful Folly (~Leo 16°52' to 22°30')
• Gate 29 — Perseverance / Saying Yes (~Leo 22°30' to 28°07')

A sixth gate — Gate 59 (Dispersion / Sexuality) — begins activating in very late Leo (~28°07') and continues into early Virgo.

For roughly five days each, each of these gates is the Sun's current activation — the field's primary frequency. Everyone on the planet is meeting that gate's theme during that five-day window.

The Four Main Leo-Season Gates

Gate 31 — The Influence (Leo week 1)

Gate 31 is one half of the Alpha channel (7-31), the channel of leadership through democratic influence. During this week each year, the field asks: are you leading from recognition or from manipulation?

Real influence is the voice a community recognizes as trustworthy. Manufactured influence is persuasion. Gate 31's shadow is the seduction of persuasion — getting people to agree through charisma rather than through what is actually correct for the group.

What to notice during Gate 31 week: where in your life are you leading? Are people following you because what you say is true, or because what you say is appealing? The distinction determines whether your leadership lasts.

Gate 33 — The Retreat (Leo week 2)

Gate 33 is the gate of sacred retelling. It is the storyteller who steps back from the action to metabolize the meaning and then return with wisdom the community could not have seen from inside the action. During this week, the field asks: what have you lived that you have not yet integrated?

Retreat is not avoidance. Retreat is the specific act of privacy that makes public wisdom possible. Gate 33 shadow is withdrawal into bitterness or nostalgia. Gate 33 in its highest expression is the elder who sits with what has happened until the lesson becomes transferable.

What to notice: are you speaking from integrated experience, or from unprocessed experience? This is a week to listen more than talk.

Gate 7 — The Role of the Self (Leo week 3)

Gate 7 is the other half of the Alpha channel — leadership through role recognition. Where Gate 31 asks about influence, Gate 7 asks about function. Do you know what role you play in the collective? Do you accept it without diminishing it or inflating it?

Gate 7 in its fullness is the leader who leads because the role requires it, not because the ego wants it. The shadow is either the role-refuser (who abandons what they were built for) or the role-performer (who plays leader without actually being one).

What to notice during Gate 7 week: what role are you actually playing in your community, your relationship, your work? Is it the role your design calls you to, or a role you have inherited and never questioned?

Gate 4 — Formulization (Leo week 4)

Gate 4 is the mental gate of answers — the pressure to provide conclusions before the evidence is complete. During this week, the field asks: where are you offering certainty you have not earned?

Gate 4's shadow is youthful folly — the confident answer from insufficient data. Gate 4's gift is provisional formulization — the willingness to hold a hypothesis loosely while waiting for the evidence that will either confirm or update it.

What to notice: where are you pretending to know? Where might "I do not know yet" be more honest than the answer you have been giving?

Gate 29 — Saying Yes (late Leo)

Gate 29 is the sacral gate of commitment. It is the root response of yes to what life presents — and the shadow of saying yes to what should have been a no. During late Leo, the field asks: what are you saying yes to that your sacral did not actually approve?

This is the culmination gate of Leo season — the place where all the solar recognition, retreat, role-taking, and answer-offering has to land in a body-level commitment. Or not land, and be released.

How Leo Season Affects Each Human Design Type

Generators: Leo season's sacral-adjacent themes (particularly Gate 29 at the end) are your natural territory. You will feel the field asking you to respond to what is actually yours to commit to. Frustration spikes during Leo season are usually a signal that you have been saying yes to the wrong things. Use the month to audit.

Manifesting Generators: The speed-plus-response cycle of your design meets Leo's radiance gates. This can be the most productive month of your year — IF you are informing. If you are not, Leo season exposes the anger that has been accumulating from silent direction-shifts. Let the field burn what cannot stay.

Projectors: Gates 31 and 7 (the Alpha channel) are the core of Projector leadership. Leo season is your annual field opening — the month when recognition of your guidance is most available. Rest in the first half. Accept invitations in the second. Do not chase.

Manifestors: Leo season demands visibility. For Manifestors, this is a stretch — your design is to close and repel until the initiation moment arrives. Leo does not want you to perform. Leo wants you to inform with solar confidence. What have you been suppressing? What initiation is waiting to be announced? The field is holding the space for it.

Reflectors: Leo season is one of your most important annual diagnostic windows. The Sun's transit through Leo creates a solar snapshot of your environment's health. Sample consciously. What feels right under Leo's light? What feels off? Trust the 28-day lunar integration — do not commit to what Leo reveals until the next New Moon has passed.

How to Work With Leo Season Consciously

Audit what you have said yes to. Gate 29 is the culmination. Before late Leo arrives, walk through the yeses you have active in your life. Which ones were sacral? Which ones were mental? Which ones were pressure? Release what the sacral did not actually approve.

Speak the role you have been suppressing. Gates 31 and 7 activate the Alpha channel. Leo season asks you to claim the role you are actually designed to play — not the role that is comfortable, not the role you inherited, but the role your chart calls you to.

Retreat before you retell. Gate 33 needs privacy first. Do not publish your Leo-season insights on Day 3. Sit with them until the integration is complete. The public wisdom lands best when the private metabolism is finished.
